These photographs offer a glimpse of three dolls at my workbench, each with a different face and character. Here, the focus is on expression, the painted details that shape how a doll looks back at us.

Transformation: From Factory Paint to Unique Identity

For the pink-haired doll, the photographs follow the transformation from her original factory-painted face to a clean surface, then to newly painted eyes, brows, and lips. The stages show how these small details give the familiar sculpt a new expression.

The dark-haired doll undergoes a similar transformation. With the original paint removed, the sculpt’s features become easier to see; the new eyes, brows, and lips then bring a different character to the same face.

These are not polished final portraits. They are small glimpses of the work in progress, faces at different stages, hair pinned out of the way, and dolls sharing the table with tools and materials. A little of what happens behind the scenes, before everything comes together for the final photographs.
